Kings were truthful in their resolutions, intent on protecting their subjects;
They looked upon other men's wives as mothers, other men's sons as their own, (23)
And other men's wealth as mere clods of earth. Thus, the people
Were devoted to their own duties, always following the righteous path. (24)
No one was a liar, no one was ever prone to negligence,
No one was a thief, no one caused harm to others, no one had evil intentions. (25)
There was no envy, no excessive anger, no extreme greed, no lust;
All had pure hearts, all had joyful minds. (26)
The lands were rich with crops, the clouds rained in season;
Even the cows were full of milk, and the trees were laden with fruit. (27)
There was no untimely death, no famine, no disease;
They were happy, well-nourished, healthy, and endowed with brilliance, form, and virtues. (28)
"Rules of vows" means those whose vows were firm; they were virtuous and lived according to their own duties. "Truthful" means they were speakers of the truth, or reality. (22)
"Kings," and so on. "Truthful in resolution" means whose mental actions were true. "Other women" means wives of others; "other sons" means children of others. (23) (24)
"No one," and so on. "Not prone to negligence" means they were attentive. "No evil intentions" means no wicked designs. (25)
"No one," and so on. "No envy" means no hatred of others' prosperity. "No excessive anger" means not possessing great rage. "Joyful minds" means those whose hearts and minds were always full of joy. (26)
"Clouds" original: "parjanya" refers to rain-bearing clouds. (27)
