The Divya divine person is like a god, with a heart that is always pure. (56)

Transcending the pairs of opposites, free from desire, seeing all beings as equal, and forgiving.

For those burdened by the impurities of Kali and whose minds are always unstable, (57)

Who are addicted to sleep and laziness, how can there be purity of temperament?

The Vira heroic practices are stated to involve the five elements. (58)

Wine, meat, fish, parched grain, and sexual union.

These five elements have been spoken of by You, O Shankara a name for Shiva, the Destroyer/Transformer! (59)

Humans born in Kali are greedy and devoted to filling their stomachs.

Out of greed, they will fall; they will not perform the [proper] practices. (60)

To satisfy their senses, having drunk much liquor...

"The Divya person," and so on. "Should be" is implied. "Like a god" means comparable to a deity. "Transcending the pairs of opposites" means one who has moved beyond the pairs like pleasure/pain or heat/cold, meaning one who is capable of enduring them. "Free from desire" means one for whom worldly passion or attachment is gone. "Seeing all beings as equal" means one who is devoid of attachment and aversion toward all living beings. "Forgiving" means one who does not retaliate when harmed by others. (56)

Having shown the practices prescribed for the Pashu and Divya, he now explains that for the people of Kali—who are always restless, addicted to sleep and laziness, and full of various sins—those practices are not achievable. "People of Kali," and so on. (57)

"Heroic," and so on. O Shankara, benefactor of the world! The five elements, starting with wine, have been spoken of by You. (58-59)

"Among them," refers to the five elements, starting with wine. (60)

"To satisfy the senses," and so on. "Liquor" means wine. (61)
