Having heard the words of the Devi, Shankara, who brings welfare to the world,
Spoke of the truth, he who is an ocean of great compassion. (1)
Well asked, O Noble One! O benefactress of the worlds!
Such an auspicious question has not been asked by anyone before. (2)
You are blessed, you know what is righteous, you are beneficial to those born in the Kali age.
Whatever you have said, O Gracious One, is true, true, and real. (3)
You are all-knowing, knower of the three times, knower of Dharma, O Supreme Goddess!
The past, present, and future are understood by You, O Beloved! (4)
According to the truth, according to justice, according to fitness, there is no doubt.
O Goddess of the gods, for those who are miserable due to the impurities of the Kali age, among the twice-born and others, (5)
There is no purification through the Vedic rites shrauta-karma rites based on the Vedas regarding the consideration of pure and impure.
Nor will the attainment of success come to humans through the samhitas collections of mantras and other smritis traditional law books. (6)
Shankara now begins to praise Parvati for her question regarding the means of liberation for living beings and prepares to provide an answer. "He who brings welfare" means he who creates the well-being of the people. "Ocean of great compassion" means the vast ocean of mercy. (1-3) "Present" means what is happening now. (4) "Miserable due to the impurities of the Kali age" means those who are suffering due to misdeeds related to the Kali age. "Consideration of pure and impure" means those who are devoid of the knowledge of what is holy and unholy. Therefore, for the twice-born dvija Brahmins and others, there is no purification through Vedic rites. (5-6)
