A decorative drop cap letter "B".The work of the late Schaeffer on Bavarian fungi justly deserves approval and esteem, as it is the first work intended for the identification of fungi in which these vegetables are delineated with good illustrations, showing their different ages and internal parts. Meanwhile, upon comparing some of the writings of more recent authors on this subject with the work of Schaeffer, it must be confessed that there are some defects in the plates and their illustrations, which are to be attributed especially to the time when Schaeffer's work was begun, when the science and study of fungi had made only small progress.
