the older writers merit praise, require more accurate comparison; indeed, others that do not belong here should be clearly excluded. This also applies to several species which have been multiplied beyond necessity, as they differ somewhat due to their native habitat, the weather, a different period of life, or other causes; although this work will always retain its value, even because of the differences rendered in the German language.
I shall now briefly mention what I have accomplished in the prepared Commentary. I have added new differences to all species, either in part or borrowed from other botanists. With the exception of fungi that I have not yet encountered and which perhaps are indigenous only to Bavaria (for some species are just as peculiar to certain regions as other plants), or those whose illustrations or descriptions were so imperfect that I could not be certain about them, I have again appended the differences established according to the Author’s descriptions, always citing the Index. Since the so-called trivial names imposed by Schaeffer have not been universally accepted, I have sometimes substituted better ones used by others or entirely new ones, always adding Schaeffer’s denominations in parentheses. Besides some exquisite synonyms, I have deemed it entirely superfluous to cite many here, especially on account of the excellent illustrations. I have omitted extensive descriptions. I did not consider brief observations, however, to be superfluous where they were necessary for a more accurate knowledge of the species, or where I was in doubt about an illustration.
