PLANT OF FRANCE
An engraving shows three views of a mushroom, labeled A, B, C, and D. A and B show the side profile of a large, scaly-capped mushroom. C shows the underside of a smaller mushroom, revealing the pore surface. D shows a magnified detail of the pores.
Boletus juglandis original: "Boletus juglandis" scœff. t CI et CII. PORT original: "PORT." for habitus or physical appearance This mushroom reaches from 6 to 16 inches in diameter in its perfect development. It is found on old walnut trees. CAP, shaped like a human ear, remarkable for an indentation caused by the stalk at its insertion. Its surface is powdery, covered with brown scales or peels. Its flesh is thick and tears with difficulty. Its pores are of irregular width and represent a honeycomb quite well; they are strongly attached to the flesh. STALK, short, covered with scales and crevices.
N. B. Figure A is that of the WALNUT BOLETE in its perfect development but reduced by half. Fig. B represents it in the state of youth. Fig. C represents it viewed from below. Fig. D is that of the pores drawn with a magnifying glass. Its flesh is firm, difficult to grind with the teeth, with a taste that is initially salty, then sweet and very pleasant. It has the smell of the common cultivated mushroom.
