It is an accepted fact that some fungi of the mushroom type are poisonous, while others are edible; but the problem to be solved is which are good and which are bad. To assist in this solution, we have provided an unusual quantity of colored illustrations of both kinds. From these, in combination with a few practical observations, we hope to provide a satisfactory answer. It must be understood at the outset that there are no general rules capable of universal application by which edible fungi can be immediately distinguished from poisonous ones. Our task would be an easy one if such a "royal road" could be discovered, but unfortunately, every effort
