The Atharva Veda

The wise ones, who dig without shovels, performing their work in the deep;
May the waters, which are better than physicians, original: "bhīṣaktarāḥ" be what we praise. || 3 ||

Without shovels. Digging. Wise ones. In the deep. Work.
Than physicians. More medicinal. Waters. Towards [them]. We speak/praise. || 3 ||

Anabhrayaḥ means those who are devoid of abhri shovels or digging implements like spades. While digging, they are those who are accustomed to digging with wooden sticks, hands, or feet. Gambhire-apasaḥ refers to those whose work apas act/work is in the deep—even in unattainable matters—these wise ones accomplish results, even difficult ones, through the power of mantras. This is a description of the priests. We are [like] these, [declaring that these] waters are more medicinal than physicians. Physicians procure medicines from elsewhere and heal, but since healing herbs exist within the waters themselves, they are superior to worldly doctors. The scripture confirms this: 'Soma told me that all medicines are within the waters... and the waters contain all medicines' (Rigveda 1.23.20). Such are the waters. There is a Vedic lengthening of the vowel even when not in a sarvanāman position (Pāṇini 6.4.11). We praise them. The word acchā is designated as a gati (Pāṇini 1.4.69).

Alternatively, the entire first half describes the waters. 'Without shovels,' they dig by breaking the banks; they are 'wise' as they are the source of intelligence for those who depend on them; they are 'deep' because their penetration occurs in fathomless places, such as deep pools. The asun suffix is applied to the root, and the nuḍ augment is optional. We praise these waters, which are extremely beneficial, even more than medicinal remedies.

The particle aha is used for emphasis. I speak of the divine waters, those in the sky. I speak of the waters of the streams—the currents. For the cleansing—the purification—of these and other waters, become like horses; become swift, you who possess the velocity of steeds.
