O Agni, whatever glory of yours is in the gods, which is heavenly; whatever body of yours has entered the ancestors;
Whatever glory of yours has spread among humans for their nourishment, O Agni, with that, place wealth in us. || 3 ||
Whatever. Of you. In gods. Glory. Heavenly. Whatever. Of you. Body. In ancestors. Entered.
Nourishment. Whatever. Of you. In humans. Spread. O Agni. With that. Wealth. In us. Place. || 3 ||
O Agni, whatever glory resides in the gods and is 'heavenly'—that which goes to the heavenly world—is used for the purpose of conveying the offering given by sacrificers to the gods. Whatever body of yours has entered the ancestors, which travels to the world of the ancestors to convey the offering kavya given with the svadhā invocation. Whatever nourishment of yours has spread among humans—that is, among all living beings—which sustains their cooked and consumed food, with that, bestow wealth upon us.
Having ears that hear, O wise one, O one who should be known, I approach you with words of praise, [seeking] pacification.
Whatever fear comes from that, may it be freedom from fear for us. O Agni, ward off the wrath of the gods. || 4 ||
Having ears. Wise. To be known. With words. With hymns. Towards. I approach. Pacification.
From which. Fear. Freedom from fear. That. To us. May it be. Ward off. Of the gods. Sacrifice. Wrath. O Agni. || 4 ||
O Agni, you who have ears capable of hearing our praise, I approach you, who are the wise one—the visionary—and the one to be known by all. I approach you for the granting of desired fruits. I beg of you with words, which are hymns and mantras. I approach you with these hymns and prayers. What kind of pacification is this? From whatever source fear arises, may it be 'fearlessness' for us. Or, may all that cause of fear not be a source of fear. Why pray for fearlessness when the cause of fear exists? To this, he says: 'Ward off.' O Agni, ward off the wrath of the gods. That is, prevent the anger of those who are displeased with us.
