You ask of me, my son and brother, that which I have never heard anyone ask of their teacher. Nevertheless, because your devotion insistently demands it, and I cannot refuse one who asks so reasonably, I write for you a short formula for an honest life, which, if you keep perseveringly while burning with the love of Christ, you will without doubt attain eternal life. Therefore, so that the speech may proceed from the interior to the exterior man, you must strive incessantly for the purity of your heart, so that God, the lover of all purity, may deign to sit there as if upon His own throne, to place His seat there as if in heaven. According to that saying: "Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool" Isaiah 66:1. And again: "The soul of the just is the seat of wisdom" Proverbs 12:8, often associated with Wisdom literature. It is necessary, therefore, that you attend to and persist in your thoughts, so that you would fear to think or meditate before God that which you would be ashamed to say or think in the presence of a human being.
