Who would think that the ethereal orbs move without the will of the gods,
Or glide through the sky, and do not move our
Bodies, nor bear the diverse shapes of men?
The twelve stars of the pole shine, which in the margin of the world
Know not the reason of the sky, wandering in any way.
That these signs likewise signify evil fortunes for the time,
And are changed by the sky acting in turn,
They deceive: and they seem to speak by no reason.
For every reason of the earth depends on the stars:
And the time of the Fates given by the greatest author
Which he offered to fixed orders, and causes stored up
For the orders of the Fates, each having its own power of form,
They know not what great mother Nature provides,
And what the wandering stars portend in the coming years.
For now, seven stars wander, shooting rays through the north:
Now they shine through your known path,
Precipitous, as if contrary to their own circles.
The stars move, and they delay their turns, and hasten their rotations.
Thus, happy or sad fate comes according to the time.
For the stars are fixed to certain globes throughout the world,
And they wander through their own motions through individual times.
They disturb the sea with winds, and the lands with hail.
They mix the air either with rains or with the blasts of the south wind.
Or they throw clouds and fires up above,
Or they send lightning with great sound and with murmuring,
By the rage of the winds and the motion of the pole.
Hence peace is vexed by wars: hence arms rest:
Hence the fertile field returns produce according to the time:
Hence it returns sterile years for the hard reapers:
