The monster said, "I was originally persuaded by the Bodhisattva Guanyin to do good. I received her commandments and have been observing a vegetarian diet here, waiting for the pilgrim who is going to the Western Heaven to worship Buddha and seek scriptures to atone for my sins and attain the right fruit. I waited for him for several years but heard no news. Today, since you have become his disciple, why did you not speak of the scripture-seeking journey early? Instead, you relied on your strength to come and fight me." The Pilgrim said, "Do not be deceitful. Do not try to trick me into a plan to escape. If you truly wish to protect the Tang monk, with no falsehoods, you must swear to heaven, and then I will take you to see my master." The monster immediately knelt down, kowtowing toward the sky like a pestle in a mortar, saying, "Amitabha, Namo Buddha! If I am not sincere, may I violate the heavenly code and have my body shattered to pieces!" Seeing him take an oath, the Pilgrim said, "Since this is so, start a fire and burn down your dwelling. Then I will take you." The monster really moved some reeds and brambles and lit a fire.
