Johannes Kepler’s
THE HARMONY
OF THE WORLD
IN FIVE BOOKS.
The first, GEOMETRICAL, on the origin and classes of the regular figures which
constitute harmonic proportions.
The second, ARCHITECTURAL, or FROM GEOMETRY OF FIGURES, on the
fitting together of regular figures in a plane or solid.
original: "Congruentia"; in geometry, this refers to how shapes fit together to tile a surface or fill a space, known today as tessellation.
The third, properly HARMONIC, on the origin of harmonic proportions
from figures; and on the nature and differences of things pertaining to song,
against the views of the Ancients.
The fourth, METAPHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, and ASTROLOGICAL, on the
mental essence of harmonies and their kinds in the world; especially on the
harmony of rays descending from celestial bodies to the Earth, and its
effect in Nature or the sublunary and human soul.
original: "Anima sublunari"; "Sublunary" refers to the Earthly realm beneath the orbit of the moon, which was thought to be subject to change and corruption unlike the "perfect" heavens.
The fifth, ASTRONOMICAL and METAPHYSICAL, on the most perfect
harmonies of celestial motions, and the origin of eccentricities from harmonic proportions.
The Appendix contains a comparison of this work with Book III of the Harmonics by the
distinguished Ptolemy, and with the harmonic speculations of Robert Fludd,
original: "Roberti de Fluctibus"; Fludd was an English Paracelsian physician and mystic.
called "of the Floods," an Oxford physician, in which a Cosmic
Structure or Metaphysics is also woven together.
