HAVING ESCAPED THE TERRIFYING WOODS original: "Silva" and the dense forest original: "Nemore", and having left behind those first places through the sweet sleep that had spread through my exhausted and prostrate limbs, I found myself anew in a much more delightful site than the previous one. This place was not surrounded by dreadful mountains and craggy rocks, nor was it carved with swollen ridges. Instead, it was harmoniously composed of pleasant little hills of modest height. These were wooded with young oaks, sturdy oaks original: "roburi", ash trees, and hornbeams; with leafy Italian oaks original: "Esculi", holm oaks, tender hazels, alders, lindens, and field maples, and fruitless wild olives, all arranged across the face of the tree-bearing hills. And down on the plain were pleasant groves of other wild trees...
