[more] well-known and admired throughout the world than here at home. It was previously translated into English shortly after it was written, and I was once inclined to think it might have been done by Sir Thomas More himself. This is because it is written in the English of his time original: "Age" and in a style similar to his own; furthermore, the translator took such liberties with the text that it seems unlikely anyone but the author would have dared to do so. An author is the master of his own book and can omit or change the original text as he wishes; this is more than a translator should do, and it is certainly more than I have dared original: "presumed" to do myself.
It was written in 1516, as is shown by the date on the letter from Peter Giles, in which he states that it was sent to him only a
