the sharpness of their brilliant minds, to restore with great ease the magnificence of their buildings to the true beauty and grace of the ancients. I pray you, therefore, my Illustrious Lord, that you—performing an act worthy of your Virtue—would deign, as a reward for the affection I bear you, to receive as a gift and favor with a cheerful countenance this first Part of my Work. It was once begun with noble thought under your most happy auspices original: "auspicij" — referring to the favorable guidance and protection of a patron, and I dedicate it to you as the firstfruits original: "primitie" — the first results of one's labor, traditionally offered as a tribute of my intellect. I further ask you to be content that now—when it stands finished through such great favor of your generosity—it may also go forth with a joyful omen into the light of the world, illuminated on all sides by the very bright light of your name. For I am certain that your testimony alone—who, by height of intellect and by the splendor and fame of most noble virtues, are greatly renowned and illustrious—will bring such greatness and such authority to these books of mine (which have deservedly already become yours), that for this reason alone I may hope to live long, and be famous and honored with perpetual praise in the memory of those who will come after us. And with this hope, wishing you a happy and joyful life, I make an end.
