PREFACE.

My work in this revision was twofold: first, that the very words of the writer might be presented in a more corrected form than before, as far as could be achieved through repeated efforts and the discoveries of learned men; and second, that I might exhibit that part of the critical apparatus original: "instrumenti critici" which I had previously collected and edited, which seemed sufficient for the common and easy use of readers. I have therefore ensured that, apart from orthographical and dialectical matters, which I have excluded almost entirely, it would be clear to those who understand that there are two sources of reading—which the codices manuscript books ABC and PR now represent jointly—while I would not transcribe the older corrections that have settled into those five, both with CP and most of R, unless I judged them either true, likely to be true, or finally, for some reason, memorable. Let this be the index of the notes which I have used in attesting the codices:

A Mediceus a manuscript from the Medici family of the Laurentian Library LXX 3, 10th century. — A² a more recent hand of the same.
