12 When they had prepared the plot, night having come (for Gyges was not released, nor was there any escape for him, but it was necessary for either him or Candaules to perish), he followed the woman to the chamber, and she, having given him a dagger, hid him behind the same door. 14 Thus the Mermnadae held the tyranny, having taken it from the Heraclidae, and Gyges, having become tyrant, sent not a few offerings to Delphi, but as many as were of silver...
