Funeral Procession of Ani (Papyrus of Ani)

The scene is depicted as a long, horizontal frieze in the traditional Egyptian style. On the left, a small shrine topped with an Anubis figure sits on a sled, followed by a line of mourners in white kilts and robes, some with hands raised to their heads in gestures of grief. In the center, a large canopy-covered shrine rests on a sledge; inside, the mummy of Ani lies horizontal, while his widow kneels before it, her hand raised to her forehead in mourning. To the right, a priest wearing a leopard-skin garment over a white kilt performs a ritual with a censer, and at the far right, two yoked oxen pull the sledge across the papyrus surface.

This artwork is a primary illustration from the 'Papyrus of Ani', a version of the 'Book of the Dead' (or 'Coming Forth by Day') intended to guide the deceased through the underworld and into the afterlife.
