About This Work
A winged woman stands in prayer upon a crescent moon, enveloped in celestial light and crowned with stars. Facing her is a monstrous dragon with seven crowned heads, its long tail pulling stars from the sky into the earthly realm. Above the conflict, God sits enthroned among clouds, as angels rescue the woman's infant child from the dragon's reach.
As part of the first book designed and published by an artist, this work defined the visual language of Christian mysticism and apocalyptic prophecy. The iconography of the 'Woman Clothed with the Sun' standing on the moon became a recurring motif in alchemical and hermetic literature, often symbolizing the reconciliation of solar and lunar forces.
