Christ in Heaven with Four Saints and a Donor

Christ is enthroned in the sky, surrounded by a ring of blue cherubim and holding an open book inscribed with Greek letters. Below him, two monastic saints stand in white robes while two female saints kneel in prayer on a rocky outcrop overlooking a detailed river valley and the city of Volterra. In the lower corner, the head and shoulders of the donor are visible in profile, gazing upward at the divine apparition.

This work reflects the Florentine Neoplatonic interest in the hierarchy of being and the soul's contemplation of the divine. The inclusion of Camaldolese saints Benedict and Romuald connects the piece to the intellectual circle of Cristoforo Landino, whose 'Disputationes Camaldulenses' sought to reconcile the active life of the citizen with the contemplative life of the monk.
