Original fileafter Hendrick Goltzius
Jesus hangs upon the wooden cross in the center, while two angels hover beside his hands to catch the falling blood in liturgical chalices. Below, the Virgin Mary stands in prayerful mourning on the left, and Saint John the Evangelist gazes upward in grief on the right. Skulls and bones are scattered at the base of the cross, and a personified sun and moon are faintly visible in the sky above a distant city.
This engraving reflects the Haarlem Mannerist interest in cosmic symbolism, using the personified Sun and Moon to mark the Passion as a macrocosmic event. The imagery of the blood of Christ being collected in vessels later resonated with alchemical and Rosicrucian thinkers who interpreted the 'Blood of the Lamb' as a spiritual 'Tincture' or the vital force necessary for the Great Work.
HGoltzius Inuent. I. Matham sculpsit. In duro cernis suspensum robore Christum, Qui neq. delictum, neq. culpam admiserat ullam: Sed tulit hanc insons pro nostro crimine pœnam, Offensi pandens cœlestia regna Parentis. C. Schonæus.
Translation
H. Goltzius invenit. I. Matham sculpsit. You see Christ hanging upon the hard oak, Who had committed neither sin nor any fault: But guiltless He bore this punishment for our crime, Opening the heavenly kingdoms of the offended Father. C. Schonaeus.
Cornelius Schonaeus
The author of the Latin verse at the bottom; a Christian humanist and rector of the Haarlem Latin school who collaborated closely with Goltzius.
Jacob Boehme
Boehme's mystical theology frequently employs the 'Blood of Christ' as an alchemical-spiritual metaphor for the divine essence that transmutes the 'base metal' of the human soul.
