Original fileafter Hendrick Goltzius
In the foreground, Charity is flanked by Faith, who holds a chalice and cross, and Hope, who rests on an anchor and gazes toward the sky. Behind them, a gnarled tree dominates the center, while small background scenes illustrate biblical narratives: Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, the Crucifixion, and Jonah being swallowed by the whale. The figures are rendered in the characteristic muscular, twisting style of the Haarlem Mannerists.
This work exemplifies the moral-philosophical program of the Haarlem Academy, where theological virtues were synthesized with humanist and Neoplatonic thought. The central position of Charity (Caritas) reflects the period's emphasis on divine love as the essential force connecting the human soul to the celestial realm.
Promissis nil diffisus celestibus Abras, Credidit, et firmæ meruit stipendia mentis. Que vis, que virtus, sit quanta potentia Amoris, Edocuit qui factus homo descendit Olympo. Ventre cauo ceti non desperauit Ionas, Astrasq' mente adyt imis demersus in undis. F.E. HG. Inuent. 1590 Matham Sculp.
Translation
In no way mistrusting the celestial promises, Abraham Believed, and earned the rewards of a steadfast mind. What power, what virtue, how great the strength of Love may be, He taught, who, having been made man, descended from Olympus. In the hollow belly of the whale Jonah did not despair, And though plunged into the deepest waves, he went with his mind to the stars. F.E. HG. Inuent. 1590 Matham Sculp.
Franco Estius
Estius composed the Latin verses at the bottom of the plate, which provide the didactic framework for interpreting the allegories.
