Publius Horatius

The central figure is portrayed with exaggerated, powerful musculature and wears an ornate helmet topped with a sphinx. In the background, miniature scenes depict the legendary battle of the three brothers and Horatius’s return to Rome. A discarded shield at his feet shows the image of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of the city.

This work is a primary example of Neostoic influence on Renaissance art, emphasizing 'virtus' (valor and moral fortitude) as a triumph of the disciplined soul over external adversity. It reflects the intellectual climate of the Haarlem Mannerists and the court of Rudolf II, where classical history was synthesized with contemporary ethical philosophy.
