The saint is shown in half-length with the traditional attributes of a traveler, including a wide-brimmed hat and a cloak adorned with scallop shells. He holds a tall pilgrim's staff while a small pouch rests on the ledge before him, set against a backdrop of a craggy rock and a weathered tree.

This work is a primary example of the Haarlem Mannerist style, characterized by the swelling and tapering line-work that Hendrick Goltzius perfected. It belongs to a series where each apostle is associated with a specific article of the Apostles' Creed, illustrating the intersection of high artistic virtuosity and late 16th-century religious orthodoxy.
