Mithuna Couple, Konark Sun Temple

This sandstone sculpture, photographed in 1976, features a male and female figure locked in an intimate embrace. The woman is shown with her legs wrapped around the man's waist, while their faces are pressed close together in a kiss. Both figures wear traditional ornaments, including large circular earrings and armbands, carved directly into the stone. The textured background is composed of a repetitive, grid-like pattern typical of temple wall reliefs.

This sculpture is part of the 13th-century Sun Temple at Konark, Odisha, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its intricate erotic iconography, which symbolizes the union of the individual soul with the divine in Tantric and Hindu philosophy.
