Surrounding the pot, grinning demons with dark skin and spiky hair use pitchforks and their hands to force more victims into the flames. The scene is a fragment of a larger medieval vision of the Last Judgment and the infernal punishments awaiting those outside the Christian faith.

As part of the Hortus Deliciarum, this image belongs to one of the first encyclopedias compiled by a woman, intended to synthesize theological and natural knowledge. It represents the rigid eschatological worldview of the 12th century, where philosophical and moral order was reinforced through graphic depictions of the afterlife and the consequences of religious dissent.
