Design for the lower half of the Disputa

This monochromatic study captures a group of figures in various states of contemplation and discussion, with some seated and leaning over large volumes while others gesture toward the center. The sketch uses wash and fine lines to define the physical weight and movement of the scholars as they attempt to reconcile human reason with divine mystery. It focuses on the human element of the theological search, emphasizing the intellectual labor of the participants.

This work is a primary study for the Stanza della Segnatura, representing the 'Disputatio' or the search for theological truth. It reflects the High Renaissance effort to harmonize Neoplatonic philosophy with Christian doctrine, viewing the collective study of tradition as a path toward the divine.
