Disputation of the Holy Sacrament (La Disputa)

The scene is divided into two realms: a heavenly arc where Christ sits enthroned between the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist beneath God the Father, and an earthly floor where theologians and Church figures gather around an altar. A golden monstrance containing the Eucharist sits at the center, serving as the focal point for the debate and the point of connection between the human and divine spheres. Notable figures including Dante Alighieri and various Popes are depicted among the crowd, set against a vast landscape with a building under construction in the distance.

As part of the Stanza della Segnatura, this work represents 'Revealed Truth' (Theology), standing in direct dialogue with 'The School of Athens' (Rational Truth). It embodies the High Renaissance effort to harmonize Christian dogma with Neoplatonic philosophy, illustrating a hierarchical cosmos where earthly reason ascends toward divine revelation.
