Original fileThis two-tiered mural in the Chapel of San Severo features a central seated Christ flanked by saints Maurus, Placidus, and Benedict on the left, and Romuald, Benedict Martyr, and John Martyr on the right. Below, six standing saints, including Jerome and John the Baptist, surround a central niche containing a statue of the Madonna and Child. The upper portion was painted by a young Raphael, while the lower register was completed by his teacher, Perugino, years later.
This work is a primary precursor to Raphael's 'Disputation of the Holy Sacrament' in the Vatican, embodying the High Renaissance interest in hierarchical cosmic order. It reflects Neoplatonic concepts of the ascent of the soul and the mediation between the temporal world and the divine intellect.
