La Trinité (Raphaël et Le Pérugin) 1

The upper portion of the fresco shows an enthroned Christ surrounded by the Holy Spirit as a dove and six seated Benedictine and Camaldolese saints. Below, a row of six standing saints surrounds a central alcove that holds a sculpted terracotta statue of the Virgin and Child. The work is famous for being a collaborative effort, with the upper register completed by a young Raphael and the lower section finished years later by his teacher, Perugino.

This fresco represents a critical transition in Renaissance art, where the young Raphael began to move beyond the traditional Umbrian style toward the complex spatial logic of the High Renaissance. The semi-circular arrangement of the heavenly host prefigures Raphael's later masterpiece, the 'Disputation of the Holy Sacrament', reflecting Renaissance efforts to visualize divine harmony through sacred geometry and Neoplatonic ideals of cosmic order.
