Raphael School of Athens

At the center of the composition, Plato and Aristotle walk forward; Plato points upward toward the heavens while Aristotle gestures toward the earth. Various groups of scholars are dispersed throughout the hall, including Pythagoras demonstrating musical ratios on a slate and Euclid illustrating geometry with a compass. The scene is set within a monumental classical structure featuring deep coffered vaults and statues of Apollo and Minerva in side niches.

The work serves as a visual manifestation of Neoplatonic thought, illustrating the reconciliation of ancient philosophy with the intellectual program of the High Renaissance. It depicts the 'Truth acquired through Reason' and honors the lineage of the prisca theologia, the ancient wisdom shared by figures like Pythagoras, Plato, and Zoroaster.
