Room of Constantine Floor (15027925523)

This octagonal segment of a floor mosaic features a central four-fold floral or foliate motif composed of small, multicolored stone tesserae. The central design is surrounded by a high-contrast black and white geometric border that creates a framing effect for the stylized plant imagery.

While the walls of this room were decorated by Raphael's workshop to celebrate the triumph of Christianity, the floor consists of original Roman mosaics salvaged and installed during 18th-century restorations. This reflects the Renaissance and later Papal tradition of physically incorporating the material remains of classical antiquity into Christian spaces to symbolize continuity and succession.
