Below him, in a recessed niche, sits a white marble statue showing Saint Anne with her daughter Mary and the infant Jesus. The entire ensemble is set against a massive pillar in the Basilica of Sant'Agostino, surrounded by dedicatory inscriptions in Greek and Latin.

This work represents the synthesis of High Renaissance art and Christian Hebraism, reflecting the humanist belief that Hebrew prophecy was a precursor to Christian revelation.
