Sibyls and Prophets

This two-tiered work surrounds an arch and a window, featuring dynamic figures in complex, twisting poses. In the lower register, the four Sibyls are accompanied by angels and putti who hold scrolls and tablets containing their prophecies. Above them, the Prophets are shown in a similar arrangement, symbolizing the harmony between classical pagan wisdom and Hebrew scripture.

This work is a visual expression of the Renaissance concept of 'Prisca Theologia,' which argued that ancient pagan seers (Sibyls) prefigured Christian revelation alongside the Prophets. This Neoplatonic synthesis was championed by Marsilio Ficino and the Florentine Academy to show that divine truth was shared across different ancient traditions.
