About This Work

This early work by Raphael reflects the emerging High Renaissance interest in geometric harmony and the human form, which contemporary Neoplatonists viewed as a reflection of divine order. The motif of the Resurrection served as a central allegory for the 'palingenesis' or spiritual rebirth discussed in both Hermetic and Christian philosophical circles of the late 15th century.
