These two black chalk sketches examine the behavior of heavy cloth as it bunches and folds over an unseen body. The upper study shows a broad sweep of fabric, while the lower study focuses on the complex layering of drapery gathered around what appears to be a knee or hip. The artist uses careful hatching and varying line thickness to establish the weight and three-dimensional volume of the material.
These are preparatory studies for the 'Disputation of the Holy Sacrament' (the Disputa) in the Vatican's Stanza della Segnatura. This room represents the pinnacle of High Renaissance Neoplatonism, where the 'Disputa' (Theology) faces the 'School of Athens' (Philosophy), visually articulating the harmony between divine revelation and human reason.
