This elaborate Mannerist ceiling displays a central coat of arms belonging to the Boncompagni family, characterized by a dragon, held aloft by putti and angels. The surrounding vault is divided into geometric compartments containing frescoes of miracles and religious events that correspond to the geographical regions mapped on the gallery walls. Richly gilded stucco work and personifications of virtues frame the various historical and sacred scenes.

Designed by the Dominican cosmographer and mathematician Ignazio Danti, this gallery represents a monumental synthesis of geography and theology. It reflects the Renaissance endeavor to map the physical world (natural philosophy) while framing it within a Providential history, asserting that the landscape of the Italian peninsula is a site of continuous divine intervention.
