About This Work
This oval engraving is divided into two registers within an elaborate strapwork frame. In the upper half, Christ kneels before an angel holding a chalice and cross, while Peter, James, and John sleep nearby; below, a chaotic scene unfolds as soldiers with torches and lanterns seize Christ following Judas's betrayal. The border features grotesque animal heads and complex ornamental scrolls characteristic of Northern Mannerism.
Produced by the Sadeler family, who were central to the artistic and philosophical milieu of Rudolf II's court in Prague, this work exemplifies the use of high-ornament prints as tools for meditation. The central motif of the chalice relates to the mystical 'cup of suffering,' a theme often explored in late medieval and early modern devotional texts concerning the submission of the individual soul to divine providence.

The visual structure serves the 'Imitatio Christi' tradition, emphasizing the interior struggle of the soul (Gethsemane) versus the exterior trials of the world (The Arrest).
