About This Work

In the center, Mary and Joseph kneel in adoration before the infant Jesus in a rustic stable, attended by an ox and a donkey. The central image is framed by elaborate scrollwork, animal motifs, and four circular medallions depicting John the Baptist, the calling of the disciples, the entry into Jerusalem, and the Ascension. Shepherds and women engaged in domestic work occupy the side panels, grounding the divine event in the physical world of labor and craft.

The Sadeler family were pivotal engravers in the court of Rudolf II in Prague, where traditional religious subjects were often viewed through the lens of Neoplatonism. The inscription's reference to 'enthea dona' (divinely inspired gifts) suggests a connection to the Neoplatonic concept of 'divine frenzy' or influx, characterizing the birth of Christ as the descent of the Logos into the material plane.

The use of the term 'enthea' in the inscription aligns with Ficinian Neoplatonism regarding divine inspiration and the nature of the soul's relationship to the divine.
