About This Work

The central scene shows Christ and Pilate standing under a classical pediment, elevated above a tumultuous mob of onlookers. The entire composition is enclosed in an intricate oval border filled with Mannerist scrollwork, architectural elements, and grotesque masks. Armed soldiers flank the central duo, while the figures below display a range of expressive, agitated gestures.

The Sadeler family were the preeminent engravers of the Rudolfine court in Prague, a major center for late Renaissance Hermeticism and alchemy. This print demonstrates how traditional religious subjects were rendered with the complex, ornamental 'grotesque' style favored by Northern Mannerists who sought to bridge the gap between sacred art and the sophisticated aesthetics of esoteric court culture.
