Original fileSeba keert zich tegen koning David
About This Work
A man identified as Sheba stands in the center of the composition, sounding a trumpet to call the Israelites to desert King David. On the left, David is shown in royal robes and a crown, surrounded by his loyal soldiers armed with pikes and halberds. The background features a winding river and a distant city where the retreating rebels head.
This work is a product of the Sadeler workshop, a family of engravers central to the dissemination of late Mannerist and early Baroque imagery. Aegidius Sadeler eventually became the court engraver for Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, a major center for late Renaissance natural philosophy and Hermetic interests.
