Original fileIn a lush landscape, a seated woman representing the Dutch Republic is crowned by Fame while surrounded by female figures representing the Liberal Arts, recognizable by attributes like the armillary sphere and musical instruments. To the right, Prince Maurice of Nassau leads a hunting party on horseback, symbolizing military protection, while the background depicts a peaceful society engaged in agriculture and maritime trade. The composition is framed by large trees and a central coat of arms held by putti at the bottom.
This work embodies the late Renaissance humanist ideal that the cultivation of the Liberal Arts and commerce (Mercury) can only flourish under the protection of a virtuous and strong leader. It reflects the Neoplatonic synthesis of civic virtue and intellectual pursuit characteristic of the Haarlem Mannerists.

Translation
EMBLEM. OF THE PRESENT STATE OF AFFAIRS IN CONFEDERATED BELGIUM. An august, vivid, and beautiful maiden; standing in a rather elevated place, under the shade of trees to which the emblems of the confederated Regions are affixed, BELGIUM: Surrounding her, moreover, is a crown of the seven liberal arts, to which an eighth, Mercury, is added among the shrubs; he designates the flourishing pursuits of Letters and Commerce. The plain below, to the left from you, clearly exhibits Agriculture disturbed; workshops in evidence; prosperous Commerce; long-distance Navigation, the growth of Cities, and other things of that kind. War itself, however, is compared to a Hunt; our returning Nimrod on horseback, Nassau, with his companion Pallas; secures a huge prey, to be offered to confederated Belgium through the hands of Victory. This is the Summary of the Table. AMSTERDAM Printed by Hermann Alardz IN THE YEAR FROM THE BIRTH OF CHRIST 1602.
Martianus Capella
The inclusion of Mercury alongside the Seven Liberal Arts refers to the tradition established in 'De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii,' where Mercury represents the eloquent transmission of knowledge.
