Original filePrince Maurice stands centrally in ornate armor, holding a commander's baton and a shield featuring his coat of arms. Behind him, a panoramic view shows Dutch infantry camps, a dense naval fleet, and the coastal city of Nieuwpoort. The entire scene is enclosed in an oval border decorated with military trophies, weapons, and heraldic shields of the Dutch provinces.
This print commemorates the military victory of the Dutch Republic and asserts the sovereignty of the House of Orange. The inclusion of verses by the jurist and philosopher Hugo Grotius connects the image to the intellectual foundation of the Dutch Golden Age and the development of early modern natural law.
BELGIADÆ PROCERES CVM RELIGIONIS AMORE, QVOS LIBERTATIS FOEDERE IVNXIT AMOR: VOS LIBERTATEM CVM RELIGIONE FOVETIS, ET VOS MAVRITIVM QVE DEVS. SIC DVCIS AVSPICYS, VESTRISQVE DEIQVE MANEBVNT LIBERTATIS AMOR RELIGIONIS AMOR. Mauritium quam sit mens felicia gesta docebunt: Illius vultum gesta latere iuvant. Talis ea est, qualis iam magno, stemmate digna est; Et qualem spondet frontis honora fides. Hic genus, hic vultum cernis, partosque Triumphos. O quam res magnas parva tabella capit! Quam bene Sculptoris manus haec tria iunxit in unum! Nosse animum ex gestis, Stirpe, colore potes. H. GROTIVS. Tandem fit Surculus Arbor Saenredam sculp.
Translation
Belgian nobles, joined by a love of religion, whom love has united in a covenant of liberty: you cherish liberty together with religion, and you cherish Maurice, whom God cherishes. Thus, under the auspices of the leader, and by your efforts and God's, the love of liberty and the love of religion shall endure. The happy deeds shall show what manner of man Maurice is: It is pleasant for his countenance to be hidden by his deeds. He is such as is worthy of his great lineage; And such as his honorable, faithful brow promises. Here you see his lineage, here his face, and the triumphs he has won. O what great things a small tablet holds! How well the sculptor's hand has joined these three into one! You may know his spirit from his deeds, his lineage, and his likeness. H. GROTIUS. At last the shoot becomes a tree. Saenredam sculp.
Hugo Grotius
Grotius provided the Latin panegyric at the bottom of the engraving, linking the image to his foundational work in natural law and political philosophy.
