Sappho was esteemed by Plato as the 'tenth Muse,' and her work represents the foundation of the lyric tradition that Renaissance Neoplatonists like Marsilio Ficino linked to 'divine frenzy' (furor poeticus). These fragments embody the precarious survival of the classical world's most influential female voice, whose work arrived in the early modern period only in tatters and citations.
