The leaf consists of laid paper laid paper: a type of handmade paper with a ribbed texture produced by the wire sieve used in its manufacture. Visible across the surface are chain lines chain lines: the wider-spaced vertical lines seen in handmade paper and minor foxing foxing: age-related spots and browning on old paper caused by mold or iron oxidation, which are characteristic of paper produced before the widespread use of modern industrial machines.
