Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) was a German polymath and a towering figure of the Enlightenment. He is perhaps best known for developing calculus independently of Isaac Newton and for his "Monadology," a theory of the fundamental building blocks of reality.
Carl Immanuel Gerhardt was a 19th-century mathematician and scholar who dedicated much of his life to organizing and publishing Leibniz's massive archive of letters and manuscripts.
