original: est caput Ecclesiæ ...is the head of the Church. Or: Doctor Wilhelm Jocher was an Assessor A high-ranking legal official or judge at the Imperial Chamber Court in Speyer for several years and is well-versed in the affairs of that court. Therefore, he is not well-disposed toward the Elector Palatine Frederick V, the "Winter King" of Bohemia and would dearly love to see the Electoral Hat The symbol of the right to vote for the Emperor transferred from Heidelberg to the art cabinet in Munich. A jab at the Bavarian Duke’s ambition to seize the Palatine's electoral title.
Regarding what the Compiler The anonymous author of the pro-Imperial attack this text is refuting indicates—that Von Plessen Volrad von Plessen, the Palatine diplomat was an envoy in Hungary—it is true that he was sent to the Diet at Neuhsohl in July 1620 to meet the Prince of Transylvania Gábor Bethlen. This Prince is a free prince original: Princeps liber and is neither a subject nor a subordinate of the Holy Roman Empire, the House of Austria, or the Crown of Hungary. However, Von Plessen did not negotiate in the least with the Hungarian Estates. The claim that he negotiated anything there to the detriment of the Roman Empire or Christendom is most firmly denied original: constantissimè negieret, and the burden of proof original: onus probandi is hereby publicly referred back to the Compiler.
The same applies to another assertion of our Compiler on page 256, where he states that the Hungarian envoy residing in Constantinople, Stephan Cotlathi, is said to have delivered a letter to the Grand Turk The Ottoman Sultan in which the fortresses of Fileck, Novigrad, Waitzen, Genea, etc., were promised to be handed over to him. The reader should note the words "is said to have delivered": which establish nothing for certain, and prove even less original: quæ nihil pro certo ponunt, multò minùs probant. Is this what it means to convict people with their own original documents (as the Compiler everywhere claims and promises to do), especially in a matter of such great importance original: præsertim in re tanti momenti? Indeed, the Hungarians say that Caesar Gallus and N. Stärger, as Austrian ministers original: ministri Austriaci, offered to cede various places to the Turk so that they might bring him into the field against the Hungarians and Bohemians. It should also be noted here that whenever the Prince of Transylvania mentions "the Germans" in his letters to Constantinople, this should be understood not as Germans in general, but as the Austrians original: non de Germanis in genere, sondern de Austriacis, as the reader will easily gather from the context of each passage and from the preceding and following text original: antecedentib. & sequentib..
The fact that he also titles the Prince of Transylvania a "Turkish vassal" in this place and throughout his Chancery shows how inconsistently original: desultorie these people act in this case, and how easily and often they change their tone. For now, the Transylvanian is considered an obedient Prince of the Empire and a member of the Estates in Silesia; he has been completely restored to favor through the Treaty of Nikolsburg. Nay, what is more, he has been promised help against the Turks from future Imperial contributions and given hope of receiving the Order of the Golden Fleece. Perhaps they will soon turn around and call him a "Mameluke" A slave-soldier; here used as an ethnic/religious slur and a perjured, enslaved Turkish...
