This illustration is the printer's mark of Johann Herwagen (Johannes Hervagius). It depicts a three-headed bust, known as Hermes Tricephalos (the Triple-headed Hermes or Mercury), mounted upon a fluted classical column. Hermes was the god of eloquence and interpretation, fitting for a scholarly press. The column stands amidst tufts of grass and foliage, a symbol of the enduring and grounded nature of classical learning.
