Whoever might tell us. Because of so much. For this much. He was angered. He grew wroth. Whether indeed. Whether truly. So. Thus. Of a prayer. Of a vow. Being absent. He blames. He accuses, he seeks out. Of a hecatomb. Hecatomb: a perfect sacrifice, either consisting of one hundred oxen, or of one hundred "bases"—that is, consisting of twenty-five animals. If somehow. Exceedingly somehow. Of savor. Fat-smoke. Fat. From which sacrifice comes. And of goats. And goats. Perfect. That is, complete in age. For a maimed animal is not sacrificed, but a healthy one, or one of the "perfect" sacrifices. Having met. Having encountered. Having partaken. From us. To make the plague go from us and away from us. Plague. Destruction. To ward off. To push away. Indeed he who having spoken. Thus.
Having thus spoken. He sat down. He sat. And to them. But among them. He rose up. He stood upright. Son of Thestor. The child of Thestor. Kalchas. The form is patronymic original: "πατρωνυμικός" (patronymikos), meaning a name derived from a father.. Of bird-interpreters. Of augurs. Of prophets. Best by far. Exceptionally best. Who knew. Who understood. The things that are. And the present things. The things that will be. And the things that will happen. The things that were before. And the things that happened previously. For as a perfect prophet, his focus is accurately upon the three times [past, present, and future]. He led. The ships. He guided. He became the leader. Into Ilium. Into Troy. Through his own prophecy. Through his private divination. Which to him. Which certain thing to him. Gave. Provided. He gifted. Phoebus. Who is among them. Thinking kindly. Understanding well. He addressed and spoke. He spoke to the assembly and said. You bid me. You command me. Dear to Zeus. Most dear to Zeus. To tell. To speak. To report. The wrath of Apollo. The anger of Apollo. Far-shooter. Shooting from afar. A marksman archer. Of the King. Of the king. But here, of the god. Therefore I will speak. I indeed shall say. Take heed. Put it together [in your mind], and agree. By resolution. And swear to me. And take an oath to me. Truly to me. Indeed truly to me. In words and hands. In words and in deeds. To help. To assist. For I truly think. I truly suppose. To provoke to anger. To cast into wrath. Who greatly. Who grandly. Of the Argives. Of the Greeks. He rules. He reigns. Or, whom the Achaeans obey. And to him. The Greeks follow. More powerful. More dominant. When he is angry. Whenever he is wroth. With an inferior man. With a lesser man. Smaller. For even if. For if also. Truly. Anger. The wrath. Him-Whether he blames us for a vow, or for a hecatomb,
If somehow, having met the savor of lambs and perfect goats,
He wishes to ward off the destruction from us.
Indeed, having thus spoken, he sat down. And among them rose 10
Kalchas, son of Thestor, the best by far of bird-interpreters,
Who knew the things that are, and the things that will be, and the things that were before,
And he led the ships of the Achaeans into Ilium,
Through his own art of prophecy, which Phoebus Apollo gave to him;
He, thinking kindly, addressed them and spoke.
"O Achilles, dear to Zeus, you bid me to tell 20
Of the wrath of King Apollo, the far-shooter.
Therefore I will speak, but you must take heed, and swear to me.
Truly, that you will willingly help me with words and with hands.
For I truly think I shall provoke a man who greatly
Rules over all the Argives, and whom the Achaeans obey.
For a king is more powerful when he is angry with an inferior man;
For even if he should swallow down his anger for that same day,
Yet even afterward he keeps his resentment until he fulfills it
In his own breast; so, consider if you will save me."
Then, answering him, swift-footed Achilles spoke:
"Taking courage, speak whatever prophecy you know. 30
For by Apollo, dear to Zeus, to whom you, Kalchas,
Pray when you reveal prophecies to the Danaans,
No one, while I live and look upon the earth,
Shall lay heavy hands upon you by the hollow ships,
Among all the Danaans, not even if you name Agamemnon,
Who now boasts to be by far the best in the army."
And then the blameless prophet took courage and spoke.
"He does not blame us for a vow, nor for a hecatomb,
But because of the priest, whom Agamemnon dishonored, 40
And did not release his daughter, and did not accept the ransom."
Therefore. On the same day, in that very day. He should swallow down. He should hold back. He should consume. The metaphor is from food being digested in the stomach and held down; at leisure, the digestion of things within it occurs. Afterward. After these things. In a second [time]. He keeps. He holds back. He guards. Resentment. Anger. Until he fulfills. So that he may complete it. In his own. In his private [thoughts]. Consider. Calculate. Examine. If you will save me. How you might save me. But him. But indeed him. Answering. Replying in turn. He spoke to him. He said to him. Swift-footed. Fast in running. Taking courage. Becoming brave and fearless. Very. Exceedingly. Entirely. Prophecy. The divination from the gods. Or what is pleasing to the gods. For these [prophets] speak things pleasing to the gods. Whatever you know. Whatever you understand. For no, by. For I swear to you. original: "οὐ μὰ γὰρ" (ou ma gar). The commentator notes that "no" is used here to strengthen the oath rather than negate it. The "no" has been used excessively, according to an unusual habit. Dear to Zeus. Most dear to Zeus. To whom you. To whom you, O Kalchas. Prophecies. The divinations from the gods. You reveal. You make clear. You bring forward. No one. Not one person. Me. Of me. Upon the earth. Upon the ground. Looking. Seeing. Or being seen. To you, by the hollow. Hollow. Deep. Heavy hands. Insulting. Murderous. He shall lay. He will cast upon, he might bring against. Among all the Danaans. Together among all the Greeks. Not even if you name Agamemnon. Not even if you mention Agamemnon himself. But Phoebus is the excellence. Now. For in the present time. By far. Greatly. Best. Most excellent. In the army. In the camp. He boasts. He brags. He took courage. He was encouraged. He was rekindled. And he spoke. And he said. Blameless. Without fault, good and irreproachable. Indeed not. Not therefore.
